Any project that deals with real-world data should devote resource to simulation. While this may not seem essential to the success of a project, simulation and modelling can often allow de-risking of processing pipelines and data analysis toolchains. In addition, synthetic environments can often help understand and mitigate sources of noise that would otherwise reduce the value of the data collected. Differences between simulated and real-world data can also suggest innovations that may not have been previously considered.
